Frequently asked questions
AIR CONDITIONING IN GENERAL
Is there a model that does not require any outdoor installation or air inlets/outlets, to and from the outside?
Answer: Every air conditioner needs a system to cool down during operation and ductwork, outdoor units or holes are a simple and cost-effective way of achieving this.
Where will I find the template?
Answer: The template is inside the box; in any case, the instruction manual (downloadable from the Internet) gives all the necessary dimensions to prepare for installation.
What is the maximum distance between Outdoor Unit and Indoor Unit?
Answer: The maximum duct length between indoor unit and outdoor unit is usually 15 metres (this should always be checked in the installation manual)
What height difference can I leave between Outdoor Unit and Indoor Unit?
Answer: The maximum difference between the height of the indoor unit and the outdoor unit is usually 5 metres (this should always be checked in the installation manual)
Are there any pumps that can handle condensate if there is a height difference?
Answer: Yes, there is a universal micropump kit for condensate removal ( B0024) but this must be bought separately
Do Outdoor Unit drain off condensate?
Answer: No
Can I install the Outdoor Unit on the roof?
Answer: There are no restrictions whatsoever, however it is important to make outdoor units easily accessible for servicing
If there is a power failure, will the units restart with the previously set program?
Answer: The control panel has an auto-restart function that can be set to achieve this.
How long can the air ducts be?
Answer: Ducts do not have predefined dimensions, you should have a thermal engineer draw up a project with a drawing of the ductwork and the correct dimensions.
Is it necessary to have an air intake?
Answer: The indoor unit must be able to draw air from the environment in which it supplies it, so an intake grille is needed
FIXED AIR CONDITIONERS
The manual mentions the A/C sensor function (no. 9 on remote control), what is that?
Answer: It is a function that enables the air conditioner to detect room temperature from the remote control and not from the split unit. The function is normally on, when you press the A/C sensor button on the remote control an icon will be shown on the display of the remote control and temperature will not be displayed on the remote control, but it can be viewed on the split unit.
Can I install the Indoor Unit behind a curtain?
Answer: No, this would create many problems connected with correct air flow
What is the reception radius of the remote control?
Answer: With batteries fully charged the action radius of the remote control is 8m, the distance will decrease as battery charge diminishes
Can I install the Indoor Unit in a corridor?
Answer: In general it would be better to install the split unit inside the room to be air conditioned, but if no other solution is possible the corridor should have a surface of at least 8-10 m2
When I use the inverter in the air conditioning mode (especially at night) I have noticed that when the temperature in the room reaches the temperature set with the remote control, the air conditioner doesn’t stop but continues to operate. Is that normal?
Answer: If the remote control does not communicate with the split unit, the temperature could be detected in the top part of the room where there are usually two degrees more than at the bottom. So this could be normal. Just increase the set temperature by one or two degrees.
Where should I have a power outlet?
Answer: in ductable models power supply connection is on the outdoor unit. The Inverter AC 11-14-17 and Inverter DC 11 models have the power cable on the split unit, the InverterMulti 22-24 models have power connection on the outdoor unit.
Is room temperature measured on the unit or on the remote control?
Answer: Room temperature is usually measured by the remote control, in addition the Diffusione models have a feature that allows the temperature to be measured from the split unit, by pressing the A/C Sensor button on the remote control (switching off the “I Feel” function).
In case of power failure, do the units restart with the previously set program?
Answer: No
MULTIPLO
Are there any pumps that can handle condensate if there is a height difference?
Answer: The Multiplo model has an accessory kit with a condensate removal pump that can handle a maximum height difference of 60 cm.
Where should I have a power outlet?
Answer: Monosplit systems have power supply connection on the indoor unit and the Multisplit systems on the outdoor unit. However it is extremely important to always check the wiring diagram in the installation manual.
Is room temperature measured on the unit or on the remote control?
Answer: The Multiplo model measures room temperature from the split unit.
In case of power failure, do the units restart with the previously set program?
Answer: Yes
With ceiling installation should I have a condensate removal pump?
Answer: Yes, the Multiplo model has an accessory kit with a condensate removal pump that can handle a maximum height difference of 60 cm.
What is the default installation configuration of the Multiplo?
Answer: The machine has no installation configuration, you need to buy one of the two installation kits with the unit.
PORTABLE UNITS
Is it true that one of the features of Issimo is that it has no condensate drain, and that the unit automatically eliminates this liquid by evaporation?
Answer: Issimo (like most of our portable units) has no condensate drain. There is only a small discharge tube for emergency use, but this is kept plugged during normal operation
Can I install a grille on the outside of the hole?
Answer: No, that would limit the flow of air too much
Can I move the unit without any problem?
Answer: Yes
How long can the duct/ducts be?
Answer: Not longer than the maximum length specified. No extensions can be added.
Is condensate removed automatically?
Answer: Yes
Can I anchor the ducts to the wall?
Answer: Yes, you just have to drill holes into the wall
PORTABLE SPLIT SYSTEMS
Can I move them without any problem?
Answer: You need to take care not to bend the flexible hoses too sharply; you should also be careful when moving the outdoor unit because there could be some water in it.
Can I remove and reconnect the Outdoor Unit myself?
Answer: To remove the outdoor unit you need the right tools, so we recommend you have this done by a specialized technician
How should the unit be stored at the end of the season?
Answer: Makes sure the flexible hoses are not bent too sharply and with the outer section connected
UNICO, PAGE 1/2
Are the two holes absolutely necessary?
Answer: The unit needs two holes in order to work so it is not possible to have just one
What is the purpose of the third hole on the template?
Answer: The hole marked as Kit KR100 on the template is an optional hole that must be made if you want to install an air replacement kit (i.e. kit KR100)
What’s the function of the plugged tube I see coming out of the unit?
Answer: The small tube with the black plug is used to drain water out of the machine whenever it needs to be opened or moved
How does the unit behave in the heat pump mode when the temperature is 0°C or less?
Answer: There is no lower temperature limit for operation of the unit in heat pump mode. The performance of the unit has been tested with an outdoor temperature of 7°C, as required by regulations. Below this temperature the performance will gradually decrease. In the lab, the units are tested with temperatures down to -8°C, below this temperature they may stop operating
Can I install Unico on a horizontal surface?
Answer: It is not possible to install Unico on a horizontal surface
In high wall installations, is it absolutely necessary for air to be blown from below?
Answer: Yes, otherwise there would be air flow problems that could cause the unit to shut down
Is it much noisier than a split system?
Answer: Numerically the sound level of the unit is higher, it is difficult to give precise information about a sensation that is subjective, but thousands of Unico air conditioners have been installed in bedrooms with very high customer satisfaction.
Should the unit be turned upside down for high wall installations?
Answer: Absolutely not, simply follow the procedure illustrated in the installation manual to rotate the external cover
Can the ducts have bends?
Answer: No, the ducts must be straight, maximum 1 metre long with a 153mm diameter.
Do I need to follow the template strictly?
Answer: Yes , you do. Only for side and upper clearances you can consider a tolerance of a couple of centimetres.
Do I need a permit to make the holes?
Answer: It is always a good idea to request a permit from the condominium administrators and also inquire whether in the town where it is installed you need to apply for a permit before installation.
What is the volume the unit can cool/heat?
Answer: The volume is not fixed (it can vary from 40 to 90 cubic metres) depending on different weather conditions and applications. It would be better to have a technician evaluate the thermal loads in the environment and advise on the most suitable unit for those conditions.
Can I rotate the unit vertically before installing it?
Answer: No, the machine can only be installed in the position shown in the catalogues on a vertical wall.
Can I install it on a window?
Answer: It is very unlikely that a glass will be able to support the weight of the unit. It is possible to install it with the ducts going through a window, but the Unico unit needs to be fixed to a structure replacing a vertical wall (e.g. on brackets)
UNICO, PAG. 2/2
Can I position the ducts vertically?
Answer: No the ducts need to be installed horizontally with no bends
How frequently do I need to clean the filters?
Answer: It depends on the quantity of dust in the air, usually it will be approx. every 450 – 600 hours of operation, then experience will tell you whether you should increase or reduce the interval between cleaning procedures
Does the machine give any indication regarding the filters?
Answer: Every 600 hours of operation, a fixed red led illuminates to remind you to clean the filters
Can I install grilles other than the ones that are supplied with the unit?
Answer: Different grilles can be installed provided they meet the required technical characteristics (free air passage area, louver direction,…)
It is possible to have air replacement?
Answer: We do make a kit (KR100) that, with a simple hole in the wall, lets you take air from the outside and send it inside after going through the machine where it is cooled/heated. The quantity of air that can be taken into the room varies between 90 cm/h and 50 cm/h depending on wall thickness
What ampere rating should the power outlet have?
Answer: Power outlets in residential buildings are now 10A and that is good
What is the minimum thickness of the wall that will support the unit?
Answer: there is no minimum thickness, the important thing is for the structure to be strong enough to support the weight of the units (almost 50 kg)
Which accessories (pipes, grilles, etc.) are supplied in the box?
Answer: The box contains pipes, grilles, fixing brackets, instruction manual and remote control
How do you calculate the Btu power rating?
Answer: You multiply the kW value by 3416
Does the unit provide both cooling and heating?
Answer: There are two Unico models, the HP (heat pump) model provides both heating and cooling
If there are only two outdoor grilles, how is condensate moisture eliminated?
Answer: There is a system inside the unit that evaporates water and eliminates it through one of the two holes as moisture, but without causing dripping or water marks around the grilles.
The technical data in the website indicate a noise level of 37 db/A, is this a constant value or does it change?
Answer: the value shown in the catalogue is measured at minimum fan speed, with higher speeds the sound level increases
Is it possible to have a switch upstream of the machine?
Answer: Yes, provided the electrician installing the switch follows all the applicable regulations
Is there a time limit for the autorestart function?
Answer: If there is a power failure while the unit is on, when the power is restored the unit will resume operation in the same conditions as before the power failure
