Renovation of the Hohenzollern Campus – Berlin

Integration of air-to-air heat pumps for the energy retrofit of a historic building from the 1950s in downtown Berlin

Client: Campus Hohenzollern
Location: Berlin - Germany
Building type: Historic 1950s building used as a campus
Climate zone: Warm
Energy class: B
System: Hybridization of existing centralized system with UNICO Vertical air-to-air heat pumps

In the heart of Berlin, within Campus Hohenzollern, an energy retrofit project was launched on a historic building dating back to the 1950s, aimed at improving overall system efficiency without invasive alterations to the existing structure.

The project involved hybridizing the existing centralized heating and domestic hot water production system by integrating a decentralized air-to-air heat pump solution. This choice optimized energy consumption and increased indoor comfort while maintaining the building's existing system continuity.

The adopted solution is based on 6 Unico Vertical units, installed to support the centralized system. Ductless technology enabled fast, non-invasive installation—particularly suited for protected historic contexts—minimizing masonry work and preserving the building's architectural integrity.
The project achieved an energy class B rating, significantly improving building performance and ensuring more efficient thermal load management across all seasons.
