Fixed air conditioners

An air conditioner is an appliance used for controlling climate within an area. It is designed to cool or heat air in order to adjust temperature and humidity in a room. The operating principle of the air conditioner is based on the concept of refrigerating cycle, i.e. transferring energy in the form of heat from a lower temperature source to a higher temperature area. We can therefore consider the air conditioner as an appliance able to transfer warmth from an indoor area, to be cooled, to an outdoor area (heat exchange), using a system similar to the one applied in freezers or refrigerators.
Olimpia Splendid offers a diversified range of fixed air conditioners, wall-mounted air conditioners referred to as “cold only” or heat pump air conditioners. Heat pump air conditioners can cool a room in the summer but also invert their operation cycle to provide heating in the winter.

 

CATEGORIES OF FIXED AIR CONDITIONERS

•    MONO-SPLIT  (SINGLE ROOM): this consists in a single indoor unit connected to a single outdoor unit.
•    MULTI-SPLIT (MULTIPLE ROOMS): these consist in a number of indoor units connected to a single indoor unit.
•   NO OUTDOOR UNIT : indoor and outdoor units are combined into a single unit and only the air intake and exhaust openings are visible on the outside.

All fixed air conditioners must be installed by a specialized technician. When installing a fixed air conditioner without outdoor unit no work will be required on the outside wall to mount the motor, only two openings need to be made in the wall.
 

- Mono-split air conditioners

Type of fixed air conditioners that separate the refrigerating cycle into 2 units.
The outdoor unit houses the compressor, the condenser coil and the expansion valve, and is designed to transfer heat outside through a centrifugal fan.
The indoor unit houses the evaporator coil and thanks to a tangential fan it blows cool air into the room.
Thanks to a special valve,  the refrigerating cycle can be inverted to switch on the heat pump mode. The outdoor motor serves as an evaporator to remove cold; the indoor unit performs condensation, and blows hot air into the room.

The advantages of mono-split air conditioners are:
• Flexible installation
• Reduced noise level in room
• Minimum indoor space requirement

Disadvantages:
• Outdoor motor visible on outside of building
• Complex installation of outdoor unit
• Mono-split systems can air condition only 1 room

 

- Multi-split air conditioners

Type of fixed air conditioners that separate the refrigerating cycle into a number of units.
The outdoor unit houses the compressor, the condenser coil and the expansion valve, and is designed to transfer heat outside through a centrifugal fan.
Each of the indoor units houses the evaporator coil and thanks to a tangential fan it blows cool air into the room.
Thanks to a special valve, the refrigerating cycle can be inverted to switch on the heat pump mode. The outdoor motor serves as an evaporator to remove cold; the indoor units perform condensation, and blow hot air into the room.

Multi-split air conditioners usually come in 4 versions:
Dual: an outdoor motor is connected to 2 indoor units so 2 rooms can be air conditioned
Trial: an outdoor motor is connected to 3 indoor units so 3 rooms can be air conditioned
Quadri: an outdoor motor is connected to 4 indoor units so 4 rooms can be air conditioned

Different kinds of indoor units are available to suit the type of installation:
Wall-split: these are the classic wall-mounted units
Cassette: these are ceiling units for recessed installation, very popular in commercial areas, produced as standard modules that can be fitted inside “ceiling squares”
Flush-mounted: these are indoor units installed in false ceilings with the advantage of blending in perfectly with the architecture of the building
Consolle: these units can be installed on the wall like normal radiators; although larger than split units they can easily be fitted under windows.

The advantages of multi-split air conditioners are:
• Flexible installation
• Reduced noise level in room
• Number of outdoor units reduced to 1, but air conditioning provided in several rooms

Disadvantages:
• Outdoor motor visible on outside of buildings
• Complex installation

 

AVAILABLE TECHNOLOGY

ON-OFF MODEL (technology consolidated for residential use)

These air conditioners either work at full capacity or switch off entirely. They work until the set point is reached and restart after a significant variation (+/- 2%) from the set temperature.
 

INVERTER MODELS (innovative technology)   

Thanks to their advanced electronics, these air conditioners can adjust frequency based on cooling needs.

CONDENSATE REMOVAL

In cooling mode condensate is removed by gravity through a special tube. Condensate is discharged outside (e.g.:  into a tank or down a drain, etc.). Unlike split portables, these units are not normally fitted with pumps as this would increase their noise level; the exception would be situations where it is not possible to have the minimum slope needed to ensure discharge by gravity. In heat pump (heating) mode no humidity needs to be removed from room air but the problem of eliminating water still exists. In this mode ice forms on the external coil which is removed by defrosting (process controlled by an electronic card; the water produced during defrosting needs to be eliminated and in most cases discharge is through a tube.
